Breastfeeding the First Few Hours
Demetria Zinga

Your infant has just entered the world a few hours ago. He's opening his eyes, rooting about, pushing his fists to his mouth, and seeking the comfort of the breast. It's only natural that your baby would have the immediate instinct of wanting to nurse. In the beginning, it may be difficult for Baby to learn to latch on, but his instincts are there. The first few hours after birth are a window of opportunity for Mom to bring Baby close to her skin and give her baby a chance to try nursing. It is within the first two hours after birth that an infant is most eager to suck.

Why is nursing the first few hours so important? Well, one important reason nursing the first few hours is so important, is Mom's production of colostrum, which is the first foods your baby will receive from you (as opposed to mature breastmilk). Colostrum is a clear, yellowish substance that is often termed "liquid gold", which has many antibiotic and beneficial features for your baby. This colostrum seals your baby's intestines to protect him from harmful bacteria. The high protein colostrum diet stimulates your baby's first bowel movement (the meconium) as well and decreases the incidence of jaundice.

Besides receiving a beneficial high protein, low fat meal straight from Mom, Baby will also learn to latch onto the breast correctly within a few days of giving birth, especially if Mom is persistent and available to feed regularly.

About supplements No doubt if you give birth in a hospital, your baby may very well be offered sugar water or a pacifier. The hospital staff mean well, but if you plan to nurse your baby regularly, getting your baby off to a good start the first few days are crucial. You can ask your nurses not to offer a pacifier to your baby, and explain that you will be happy to nurse whenever your baby gets fussy. Pacifiers have been associated with problems such as ear infections and early weaning. In addition, using pacifiers interferes with Mom's milk supply. For the first few weeks, especially, it is important to keep Baby in practice with learning to nurse. Sugar water, on the other hand, may be given for necessary and medical reasons, such as for a baby who has low sugar levels, or one who has undergone much stress during labor and delivery. But if there are no medical reasons for offering sugar water, ask the nurses to bring your baby to you for feedings regularly.

Correct Positioning Here are a few steps that may be helpful when beginning a breastfeeding session:

1.)Be sure you are comfortable. Relax your body and muscles. Now, bring your baby to you (don't lean into your baby!) 2.)With your opposite hand support your breast with your thumb on top and your fingers below the areola. 3.)Make sure Baby's mouth is opened wide, and that his lower gum is below the base of the areola. You don't want Baby to accidentally bite down on the tip of your nipple. That could hurt and send you both in tears! 4.)Compress your breasts gently, inserting as much milk into your infant's mouth as possible 5.)When your baby has indicated that he's full, or perhaps has fallen asleep, it's time to end the feeding. If baby has not come off the breast by himself, you will need to break the suction by placing your finger into the corner of his mouth until you feel the release.

Breastcare

No doubt you may find your nipples to be cracked or sore in the beginning, especially if Baby's latch wasn't positioned correctly. It is recommended to leave your bra flaps down and allow your nipples to air dry right after a nursing session. There are also ointments and creams made especially for these predicaments. You may also find that your breasts are leaking milk throughout the day. My recommendation would be to nurse as frequently as your baby requires, especially since breast milk is digested so quickly. Others would rather express their milk manually or by using a breast pump, in order to store milk for family members to help out with feedings. Yet another solution, though temporary, is to wear nursing pads in your bra, to keep the milk from leaking through your clothing. Remember, though, that your milk is flowing regularly as a normal part of the nursing process, and that your natural let-down reflex is sometimes an indication of an upcoming feeding time. Before you begin pumping, you may want to check the clock to be sure it's not time to feed Baby again.

For more details on breastfeeding and breast care, you can contact your local local La Leche League. They can help with securing equipment, materials, and advice about breastfeeding.

Internet Marketing and Advertising Strategies - Circumventing the Chase for Google Rankings
Most website owners spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars (or hours) trying to get their websites to appear on the first page of Googles natural search results and, more often than not, their placements are restricted to a number of obscure keyword phrases few use to find related products and/or services. What may come as a surprise to many, the expense could have been avoided had they taken a simple but dramatically different approach to online marketing. [PRWEB Nov 6, 2005]

We had a rehearsal tonight (the Arkansas Youth Symphony). The Side-by-Side concert is next Saturday .... I just can't contain my excitement. Or nervousness... same thing. The Youth Symphony has a rehearsal with Maestro Itkin next Thursday (a week from today) and I've really gotta get the passage from Debussy's Nuages (Fetes) under my fingers. It's there... just not quite all the way. And those arpeggios in the Dvorak... I'm luck if I can fake them. At least I can pull some pretty good fako mondo on the Debussy. We'll see about New World. The first (and last... oh, the /only/) rehearsal with the ASO is on Saturday, a few hours before the performance. This will be my first experience to play in such an awesome Music Hall (Robinson Music Hall). Soo.... time to sleep so I can be awake tomorrow...

Blogging jumps the shark
Blogging jumps the shark: No, wait, what I meant to say was a shark jumps into blogging. (If you really care, here are the details of Donald Trump's new blog.) The first few posts are snippet Donaldisms, like, "The glamour and grandeur of my buildings and my life are no mere trappings." Huh? I hope that was merely something to see if the "publish" button works. If this turns out to be the style of "his" blog, I predict parody blogs within 24 hours. (via: IWantMedia.com)

- Re: Werewolf: Curse of the Lighthouse 2 - GIP
We're really not doing well. First the doctor, then the medium? I'm very sorry I'm not any help at all. I am just a regular vanilla villager. I've been running on about 8 hours combined sleep these past few days and I am very sorry. I am grateful that I do not have a main role. Trust me, I am just a passenger of this ship. Nothing more, nothing less. (Unless I'm cursed, but I dunno.)

Wizard Kings - Re: How Long does the base game play
All Our very first game with the basic suggested armies (100GP) took just a touch over 1.5 hours with my 13 year old. We had a few questions about hexsides (how much forest or mountain was enough to cause the 1-unit limit - needed the full width to limit) and also whether fliers were pinned by ground units (not mentioned as an exception, so they were). I'd expect it to come down to an hour now that we're more familiar with the rules etc. and how the system pans out. Mike

German Spam is Becoming Overwhelming

Crooks and Liars tracked it down: Direland has the scoop The racist spam that has flooded inboxes from Australia to Anaheim with hundreds of thousands of e-mails is designed to boost the NPD's score in elections this coming Sunday in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populated state. Various security firms have released warnings that they received hundreds of thousands of Sober.Q emails within the first 24 hours of the virus' outbreak."

Major Floods hit Delaware river Basin
The entire Delaware river basin was hit by two massive storms over the past 8 months. The first storm was September 18, 2005 ( Hurricane Ivan). This storm hit Point Pleasant and River Country hard. In fact the water level rose to within 2 feet of the top of the bridge pillars! If that wasn't bad enough the Delaware River was hit a second time (within 6 months) by 4 inches of rain within a few hours, leading to a river height that has only been exceeded by the great flood of 1955. This time the river level rose to a level that was 3 feet above the bridge pillars !

Grant Cushman Audio Diaries - Part One
With classes back in session in some parts of the Valley, High School students are returning to the daily grind of homework, cafeteria food and swapping summer stories with friends. But few have a tale as interesting as 17-year old Grant Cushman's. Rather than spend the summer flipping burgers or working in the mall, Cushman went to Italy for three weeks as a foreign exchange student. He was a Youth Ambassador to Phoenix's sister city, Catania in Sicily... he took a recorder with him to keep an audio diary of his experience. Over the next three weeks, we'll hear about Grant's trip... leaving his family for the first time and his adjustment to a a culture half a world away. We catch up with him in the middle of the night here in the Phoenix, in the last few quiet hours before he'd board a plane bound for Italy.

Galway Weekend
Yesterday I turned in my first paper of the semester. Who knew you could write 3,000 words on the structure of conversation? Today 9 friends and I took Bus Eireann for 5 hours to arrive at Galway, a city on Ireland's west coast. Travel literature I have read say Galway is the fastest growing city in Europe — I will research the matter further and report back with the whole story. This evening we had dinner at a fantastic restaurant called Couch Potato where every meal is served in a potato. They have pizza potatoes, pasta potatoes, and others. I had the Hawaii 5-0 potato, stuffed with shredded ham, pineapple, peppers, and cheese. In the next few days we are going to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Arran Islands: scenic Ireland at its best.

Meet The Interns
Over the next few weeks you will get a glimpse of each of our interns. We have them chained to their computers 24 hours a day, so they may hunt and gather gossip for you, our faithful readers. This weeks featured intern is Erin. My name is Erin, I grew up in Saratoga Springs NY as well as various places around the US including Chicago, San Francisco, and Atlanta. I completed my first year of college this past spring, majoring in Interior Design. I currently live in Manhattan, and am looking to change my major to a focused area in journalism. I am taking a semester off, and not returning to school until at least the Spring of 2006. I enjoy traveling, nightlife, and of course....celebrities and gossip.

Moark and the Cruelty Code of State of Missouri
What a pleasant night this past Thursday evening was. Just a few hours before sundown and the Newton County Fair was well underway in its first day.

The Value of Reflection
I am on vacation (believe it or not) and travelling in Guatemala for a week. Against the advice of some, I have brought along my laptop and have had the good fortune of finding free internet in almost every place that I have stopped. I am taking this opportunity to finally reflect on the last several months of work. The first few hours of vacation have allowed me to catch up on writing, reading blog posts and having chance meetings with Mac users along the way. I am indulging in 'How People Learn' and things are starting to feel relaxed! Hopefully I will find time for some blog posts.

Manchester Dems ask Lieberman to change stance on war
MANCHESTER - In what appears to be a first for the state, the Democratic Town Committee on Tuesday approved a resolution opposing Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman's backing of the war in Iraq. The resolution was suggested and written by Joseph Rafala, 79, a committee district chairman, town constable, and World War II veteran. No Lieberman representatives attended the meeting, but Lieberman's office contacted Democratic Town Chairman Ted Cummings on Tuesday to invite him and Rafala to meet with the senator. Both men said they weren't sure they would take the invitation, hoping to have Lieberman meet the committee publicly. Though the resolution was hotly discussed for nearly two hours, the measure was resoundingly passed, with few dissenters standing up for Lieberman's position.

Few hours of madness after school
How much can two kids pack into two hours? First it was the painting, then the tents, then the dolls (below) who were invited to a party. Then, Bradley comes home from school also, and it's dressing up time, he as a pirate, she as a fairy bride, I think. "Daddy can you help?" That's too many babies Esme." "Daddy can you help? PLEASE!!!!"
